Events

November 11th - Veterans Day

Although President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11, 1919 to be Armistice Day, it wasn't until 1938 that the day was made a national holiday "...dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as 'Armistice Day'."

In 1954 Congress passed, and the President signed, a law changing the day to 'Veterans Day,' honoring veterans of all wars. President Eisenhower issued the first Veteran's Day Proclamation on October 8th.

In honor of this day, the Library & Instructional Technology Center presents a display of government publications by and about Veterans.

DVD of the Month

This month's featured DVDs are Ed Wood and Plan 9 from Outer Space.

Edward D. Wood, Jr. (1924-1978) is considered by many critics to be the worst filmmaker of all time. His name has become synonymous with lack of talent. Movie critic Leonard Maltin has written: "Wood's films are so uniformly, absolutely awful that they are great fun to watch, and in the years since his death he has developed into a bona fide cult personality."

CD of the Month

Noches de Espana (Spanish nights):
Romantic guitar classics (Philips G2-42150)

Pepe Romero

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, we have selected a CD that covers a wide time range in Spanish music. Only one CD could be chosen, but the heritage of Hispanic music includes many countries, many composers, and many styles. Hispanic countries include Spain, Portugal, all the South American countries (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, etc.), all the Central American countries (Honduras, Nicaragua, Guatemala, etc.), Mexico, Cuba and other Caribbean countries, not to mention all the areas that have been influenced by and assimilated Hispanic cultures (the Hispanic diaspora).
